Multidirectional Forklift Truck Training Course

Specialist Operator Training | Certified & Compliant | Practical Real-World Skills

Course Overview:

Our Multidirectional Forklift Truck Training Course provides operators with the advanced skills and safety knowledge required to operate multidirectional lift trucks in complex, space-restricted environments. Whether you’re a first-time user or an experienced driver looking to convert or refresh your certification, this course ensures full compliance with UK Health & Safety legislation.

Multidirectional forklifts are engineered to handle long, bulky, or awkward loads — such as timber, steel, piping, and large panels — and are ideal for industries like construction, manufacturing, and warehousing. With the ability to travel forward, backward, and sideways, these trucks offer superior manoeuvrability but require specialist training to operate safely.

Who Is This Course For?

  • Novice Operators: With no prior forklift experience.
  • Experienced Operators: Seeking formal certification or conversion.
  • Refresher Trainees: Re-certifying after a lapse in certification or time out of operation.
  • Employers or Managers: Needing certified staff for heavy-load or specialist operations.

Course Content:

Theory Training:

  • Introduction to multidirectional forklifts and their unique applications
  • Key operational differences from counterbalance and reach trucks
  • Responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Overview of PUWER & LOLER regulations
  • Understanding steering modes and directional control
  • Load stability and risk awareness with long loads
  • Daily inspections and defect reporting procedures
  • Awareness of load centres, overhangs, and turning radius
  • Fuel types, battery care, and safe refuelling/charging procedures

Practical Training:

  • Pre-use safety checks and machine familiarisation
  • Operating in standard, side, and crab-steering modes
  • Handling long or uneven loads safely and securely
  • Manoeuvring in narrow aisles, yards, or external storage areas
  • Picking up, transporting, and placing long loads in racking or on flatbeds
  • Safe stacking, unstacking, and turning with overhanging material
  • Emergency stopping and secure parking procedures
  • Simulated real-world tasks to build operator confidence

Assessment & Certification:

The course concludes with a written theory test and practical operating assessment. Successful candidates will receive a nationally recognised operator certificate and/or operator’s card, valid for 3 years.

Training is delivered in accordance with HSE Approved Code of Practice L117 by certified, experienced instructors.

Course Duration:

  • Novice (No Experience): 3–5 days
  • Experienced Operator (No Certification): 2–3 days
  • Refresher Course: 1 day
  • Conversion from Other Truck Types: 1–2 days
