Course Overview:

Our Order Picker Training Course is designed to give operators the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to operate low-, medium-, and high-level order picker trucks safely and effectively in warehouse and logistics environments. Whether you’re working at ground level or elevated picking heights, this course ensures full compliance with UK Health & Safety laws and best practices.

Order pickers are essential in fast-paced, stock-intensive environments such as retail distribution centres, ecommerce warehouses, and manufacturing plants. However, due to the manual handling, elevated platforms, and shared workspaces involved, operators must be professionally trained to manage risks and avoid incidents.

Who Is This Course For?

• Novice Operators: With no previous experience using order picker equipment.
• Experienced Operators: Seeking certification or converting from other lift types.
• Refresher Trainees: Needing to renew an expired or lapsed certificate.
• Warehouse Teams: In need of compliant, confident, and efficient order picking staff.

Course Content:

Theory Training:

• Introduction to order picker trucks and their applications
• Types of order pickers: low, medium, and high-level
• Legal duties under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
• PUWER and LOLER regulations for safe lifting operations
• Working at height: fall protection and platform safety
• Load limits, weight distribution, and stability principles
• Safe pedestrian interaction and traffic flow in shared workspaces
• Daily inspections and battery maintenance procedures
• Emergency lowering systems and evacuation protocols

Practical Training:

• Pre-use checks and identifying faults
• Mounting, dismounting, and harness use (for high-level platforms)
• Safe manoeuvring in warehouse aisles
• Accurate picking, stacking, and product placement
• Operating at various height levels with load control
• Awareness of pedestrians, racking systems, and tight spaces
• Emergency lowering, shutdown, and secure parking
• Simulated picking tasks under supervised conditions

Assessment & Certification:

All candidates will be assessed via a written theory test and a practical operating exam. Successful trainees will receive a recognised Operator Certificate and/or Photo ID Card, valid for 3 years.

Our courses are fully aligned with HSE Approved Code of Practice L117, delivered by experienced and accredited instructors.

Course Duration:

• Novice (No Experience): 3 days
• Experienced (No Certificate): 1 day
• Refresher Training: Half or full day
• Conversion from Other Truck Types: 1 day

Entry Requirements:

• Minimum age 16+ (18+ for unsupervised workplace use)
• Basic English comprehension for theory and safety instruction
• Physically capable of working at height where applicable
