Overhead Crane Training Course

Safe Lifting Operations | Industrial Compliance | Fully Accredited Certification

Course Overview:

Our Overhead Crane Training Course is designed to provide operators with the essential skills, knowledge, and confidence to operate pendant, remote, or cab-controlled overhead cranes safely and competently. Used extensively in factories, warehouses, shipyards, steelworks, and manufacturing environments, these cranes are capable of lifting heavy or awkward loads and therefore present significant safety risks if not operated correctly.

This course ensures operators understand lifting regulations, load assessments, signalling, and the critical steps for maintaining safety during crane operations—whether it’s a single lift or part of a complex lifting plan.

Who Is This Course For?

  • Novices: With no prior overhead crane experience.
  • Experienced Operators: Looking to formalise skills with certification.
  • Refresher Candidates: Updating expired or soon-to-expire qualifications.
  • Employers: Needing certified, compliant staff for overhead lifting operations.

Course Content:

Theory Training:

  • Introduction to overhead cranes and types of control (pendant, radio, cab)
  • Roles and responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Lifting Equipment Regulations: PUWER & LOLER explained
  • Basic lifting principles, load weight, and centre of gravity
  • Slinging and signalling (banksman duties if applicable)
  • Pre-use checks and defect reporting procedures
  • Safe working loads, lifting accessories, and lifting points
  • Common causes of accidents and how to prevent them
  • Shutdown, emergency procedures, and isolation of power

Practical Training:

  • Pre-operational checks of crane and lifting accessories
  • Correct use of slings, shackles, chains, and hooks
  • Safe attachment and detachment of loads
  • Raising, lowering, and travelling with a load
  • Manoeuvring loads around obstacles with precision
  • Communication with banksman/signaller (if applicable)
  • Operating using pendant, radio, or cab controls
  • Safe shutdown and securing of crane after use

Assessment & Certification:

Candidates will complete a theory test and a practical assessment. On successful completion, participants will receive an Operator Certificate and/or Photo ID Card, valid for up to 3 years.

All training is delivered by qualified instructors and complies with HSE, LOLER, and PUWER safety regulations.

Course Duration:

  • Novice Operators: 1–2 days
  • Experienced (Uncertified): 1 day
  • Refresher Training: Half or full day
  • Slinger/Signaller Module (Optional Add-On): Half day
