Course Overview:
This combined MEWP (Mobile Elevating Work Platform) 3A & 3B Training Course covers the safe operation of both scissor lifts (3A – Mobile Vertical) and boom lifts (3B – Mobile Boom). Designed for those working at height across industries such as construction, facilities maintenance, warehousing, events, and more — this course ensures full compliance with Working at Height Regulations 2005, PUWER, LOLER, and HSE L117.
Operators will learn how to inspect, manoeuvre, and operate both types of MEWPs safely, with a focus on hazard awareness, fall protection, and emergency procedures. This training is essential for anyone required to use powered access equipment in a professional setting.

Course Content:
Theory Training (Covers Both 3A & 3B):
- Introduction to MEWPs: Scissor vs Boom platforms
- Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
- Working at Height Regulations 2005
- PUWER & LOLER legal responsibilities
- Safe working loads, platform limits, and wind ratings
- Emergency lowering systems and rescue plans
- Identifying site-specific hazards (overhead, ground conditions, weather)
- Pre-use inspections and defect reporting
- Battery/fuel safety and MEWP maintenance basics
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and harness requirements
Practical Training:
MEWP 3A – Scissor Lift:
- Pre-start checks and safe entry/exit procedures
- Vertical movement and control systems
- Manoeuvring in confined areas and indoors
- Ground condition awareness and stabilisation
- Elevated platform safety and visibility
MEWP 3B – Boom Lift (Cherry Picker):
- Boom extension and articulated movement control
- Safe use in external, uneven, or sloped areas
- Fall arrest system fitting and use
- Obstacle navigation and positioning
- Emergency lowering and recovery simulation
Assessment & Certification:
All participants will complete a theory test and practical assessments for both machine categories. On successful completion, candidates will receive a recognised Operator Certificate and/or Photo ID Card, valid for 3 years.
This course meets HSE, WAHR, and industry standards for working at height.
Course Duration:
- Novice (No Experience): 1 full day (up to 2 depending on group size)
- Experienced Operator (Uncertified): 1 day
- Refresher Course: Half to full day
- Conversion (from 3A to 3B or vice versa): Half to 1 day
Entry Requirements:
- Must be aged 18+
- Physically fit and medically suitable for working at height
- Comfortable with basic spoken and written English
