Course Overview:
Our Rough Terrain Telescopic Forklift Truck Training Course — commonly known as Telehandler Training — is designed to equip operators with the knowledge and practical ability to safely operate telescopic handlers across challenging outdoor sites and rough terrain environments.
Used widely in agriculture, construction, landscaping, and heavy industry, telehandlers combine the lifting power of a forklift with the reach of a crane. Their versatility allows them to handle palletised loads, bulk materials, or attachments such as buckets and winches. Due to their variable reach and higher risk profile, specialised training is legally required for safe and compliant operation.
Who Is This Course For?
- Novice Operators: With no prior telehandler experience.
- Experienced Operators: Looking for formal certification or transitioning from other lift trucks.
- Refresher Trainees: Re-certifying after time away or expired certification.
- Construction or Agricultural Teams: Needing compliant site-ready operators for heavy-duty work.
Course Content:
Theory Training:
- Introduction to rough terrain and telescopic forklifts
- Legal duties under Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
- PUWER and LOLER regulations explained
- Load capacity, reach charts, and stability principles
- Ground conditions, slopes, and uneven terrain risks
- Centre of gravity, overturning risks, and boom extension safety
- Machine components, hydraulics, and steering modes
- Attachments, quick hitch systems, and load security
- Refuelling, maintenance, and daily safety checks
- Site awareness: pedestrians, overhead obstructions, weather impact
Practical Training:
- Pre-use inspection and machine familiarisation
- Manoeuvring over rough, sloped, and uneven terrain
- Using telescopic boom controls safely and efficiently
- Lifting, transporting, and placing loads at height and reach
- Operating with different loads and attachments (if applicable)
- Safe use of stabilisers, forks, and bucket controls
- Reversing, tight space turning, and hazard awareness
- Parking, shutdown, and securing the machine after use
- Simulated worksite tasks under trainer supervision
Assessment & Certification:
Candidates will complete a written theory test and practical performance assessment. On successful completion, trainees will receive a recognised Operator Certificate and/or Photo ID Card, valid for 3 years.
Training meets the requirements of HSE Approved Code of Practice L117, and is delivered by experienced, accredited instructors.
Course Duration:
- Novice (No Experience): 3–5 days
- Experienced (Uncertified): 2–3 days
- Refresher Course: 1 day
- Conversion Course (from other lift types): 1–2 days
Entry Requirements:
- Minimum age: 18+ for construction sites
- Physically fit with good hand-eye coordination
- Basic understanding of English for safety and theory assessments
